Chojubai in development

One of the most frequently-uttered phrases I've heard Michael Hagedorn say in classes where we work on chojubai is "chojubai loves cold". They are highly cold-tolerant.

Another memorable (over 6-7 years) chojubai experience at Hagedorn's is to see a really sick one arrive from a client in a much hotter climate, with the teacher saying "it's just too hot down there for chojubai" (there = SoCal). Chojubai loves cold, apparently.

Yeah but I can definitely say they don’t like Rocky Mountain cold, lol. I left one out all winter a few years ago and it did not survive the winter. They’re not as cold hardy as some other deciduous. They’re definitely frost/freeze hardy, though.

I haven't had any problems with mine in the winter in the coldframe. They have gotten below freezing a few times. I think my winters are more humid here than in some places though which might help (?)

i was looking through this guys mini bonsai blog and saw he picked up a longevity plum that came from Onuma

this is the youngest material ive seen of his so far. is this what 10 years of cutting back low every year does, while keeping it in a round pot so the roots will circle, while also letting escape roots grow into a grow bed/tray/another pot?

this was the only other pic i could find before the development stage Jonas takes pics of, and that Onuma shows on his youtube.

They lose their leaves around the same time as the amur honeysuckle, which says a lot. At least mine do.
