Clay slabs?

I know none of the art that goes into making one so please forgive my ignorance, are clay slabs a thing? Most of the reasons I can think of that would make it a bad idea could be overcome by a skilled hand?

They can be... like a flat scoop? I think I have one out in the nursery that looks a bit like sandstone. fairly heavy.

Lang Bonsai makes some really outstanding and large ceramic slabs.
