You need a good sized black rat snake. Just have to figure out how to keep it from escaping. What are the odds that my rabbit pruned Siberian Elm live? I need to winter the trees inside chicken wire.![]()
Nice trunk chop. You will thank the rabbit later. Those will have nice taper once sprouted. They will be just fine... It is an elm after all. What are the odds that my rabbit pruned Siberian Elm live? I need to winter the trees inside chicken wire.
The twin trunks are nubs now. The wood in the pot is the cedar mulch it over wintered in, & some Siberian Elm sawdust.

With any luck the longer one will push branches down the trunk which will only help to fatten it up. My guess is they'll all recover. I have a rabbit that does some of my winter pruning as well. It never bothers the trunks thankfully. My developed trees get stashed away where it can't get to them.Nice trunk chop. You will thank the rabbit later. Those will have nice taper once sprouted. Those will come back and it will give the trunk some extra movementWhat are the odds that my rabbit pruned Siberian Elm live? I need to winter the trees inside chicken wire.

Biggest snake around here AFAIK are corn snakes. I could really go for a den of foxes. You need a good sized black rat snake. Just have to figure out how to keep it from escaping.
Not sure I'll actually thank the rabbit.Nice trunk chop. You will thank the rabbit later. Those will have nice taper once sprouted. They will be just fine... It is an elm after all.
I hope you're right. I normally like to do the trunk chops myself, but not as low as the first picture. With any luck the longer one will push branches down the trunk which will only help to fatten it up. Sounds good. Everyone is making lemonade, so I'll have a tall glass with ice. Those will come back and it will give the trunk some extra movement
Put a shot of vodka in it and you'll feel better about your tree.Everyone is making lemonade, so I'll have a tall glass with ice..
If you do that annually to that chopped off one, it’ll actually make a little mountain of a bonsai trunk.
Wow glad to see its growing happily.

Love the set up!I HAVE NOT QUIT.
You guessed it……overwhelmed by crop fails…….and some career things.
Now is good.
Starting a new career in 6 weeks.
Lots of outdoor growing( plant hoarding).
For future sales.
Here is the current thing.
-A couple trays of Sargent Crabapple
-a tray or two of zelkova
-All the rest are pine seedlings.
Will be planting more and more pine seedlings till about the first day of Summer at the latest.
Not enough time after that.
Only growing pines in the growhouse over winter now……more durable for sure.
Will be nice to have all the extra stock.
I WILL START SEEDLING CUTTINGS PROCESS NOW ALSO.Maybe have a whole growhouse full already by winter and notbhave to start any over winter.
I am thinking to start loosely in perlite and soahgnum like I used to and then select the rooted cuttings and plant them into 3”grow blocks right from the get go!!
They will definately be nice to push candle growth over winter indoors around end of January after a short winter dormancy.
Then shoot right into some great 2026 growth.
Pines have always survived…….long as I do not crowd them.
3” blocks would be perfect!!
I will keep growing…….it is so worth it seeing the Pines!!View attachment 599698
Very awesome. It would make a nice grove. It seems like one you would see during a walk in a community park.A clump of elms from @cmeg1
Apparently I skipped it over when fertilizing as it looks paler than anything else I have.
Clipped it today and massaged the stems in the direction I would like them to grow. And, yes, fertilized.

Same! I have one of Curtis' pines I dug up this spring and it looks just like yours.
