Hi,

I've never collected trees before. I live in southern New York (zone 6b) and I want to collect a few larches I found in a bog. I heard it's best to collect them in the spring just before their bud break. I'm not familiar with recognizing the health of larches, and I read that it's very important to collect a healthy tree.

Can anyone who has experience collecting larches give me some fundamental pointers? Since it'll be in the spring, is it ok to cut some of the roots? If so how much? How do I treat collected larches when they're brought home? What kind of soil do they need?

Your help is much appreciated!

T

Check out Nick Lenz's book, "Bonsai from the Wild". He has extensive information on collecting Larches esp. bog larches.

I think you are correct and collecting should begin in the springtime at least this is what I have heard from our club members. Any other time you run the risk of the tree "heading south". Dave / Colorado Springs
