What say ye, fellow nuts? Big leaves, tiny fruit, great bark. This is a common landscape and street tree where I am. If it is a crabapple, does anyone recognize the variety?

Thanks; that's it! I'm considering an air layer. Based on my limited/hasty research into this species as bonsai, it would have to be petty big to be believable . . .

It would have to be big but I think it would turn out to be an amazing piece, especially in full bloom in spring.

Some members of our club have nice specimens. I had one for a while, tremendous bark and good potential, but when I bought it it was very weak and I was unable to nurse it back to health. I'd love to get another one.

Attached is the pear at the PAC NM Bonsai Museum. It's one of my all time favorites.
