Just rescued a monster crepe Myrtle distined for cutting, base is 9 inches with root base of 14 inches. I'm hoping to save and revive this tree for my future project. Base was almost cut down but I saved it on time. It's still alive and giving out new growth in growing pot.:)

If you think you can ever get it to heal over, deal with, or incorporate it somehow, you might as well go ahead and chop that thing for taper. I have several crape myrtles of that size and I've opted to see if I can get a (huge) chop to heal. We'll see. They certainly give you an opportunity to work them pretty often.

Thats pretty big, what size Bonsai do you hope to wind up with? I am not familiar with collecting trees and growing new leaders when they are that size of a trunk but it would seem the new leader would have to be pretty large to look natural? If nothing else you have some nice fence posts there! :p
