Hey... so just noticed that one of my Montezuma Cypress had a large piece of bark flapping in the wind. Never seen or had this issue with any of my other trees. The Leader is still green... could this section be dead? Curious.... Thanks!

Yes, that section of bark died. However, if Montezuma is similar to bald cypress the adjacent bark will roll over. You may want to keep some bare wood as a feature.

That portion of the trunk has died. That can happen if you're a bit too aggressive with root or top pruning. I've found that there is a direct correlation between roots and branches on bald cypress. Branches typically have large roots directly under them. Note the dead strip is on the side of the chop that doesn't have the leader...

Thanks Zach... Could definitely be interesting! Curious to see how this progresses... would like to see some of the bark roll over.

GUILTY! Really went at it last season. Hoping this could be at some point aesthetically pleasing... then I can say I planed the whole thing.
Went around the whole tree and so far this is the only spot I can tell that has dead wood. Just starting to bud out at the top... we shall see.
Thanks @rockm

I've had this happen with BC's from time to time. The healing has been pretty strong, in some cases closing over in just a couple of years.
