Hi, I’m just curious and I know it’s a picture but any indicator by comparison to the dawn redwood to the left if the one in my hand is just a stick? I know it’s Deciduous by it’s awfully early don’t you think? I haven’t done a scratch test yet. Thanks for any insight

It is a bit early to go dormant.
Don't bother with a scratch test. That rarely gives us any worthwhile information but opens a wound that can get infected while the tree is under stress.
I always continue care (adjust watering while it has no leaves and cannot transpire water) for at least 3 months or until the following Spring or until the stem is obviously dry. Sometimes trees recover after quite a long period without foliage.

Some background about your dawn redwood would be useful to help with diagnosis. How long have you had it? When did the elaves drop? Any symptoms before the elaves fell? What did you do to it recently? Watering? Soil? Fertiliser? any differences in care or position from the other tree?

Usually premature leaf drop is due to stress but stress can be a number of different things - not enough water, Too hot, Too much water, Root problems, toom much sun, Not enough sun, etc.

It was part of three seedlings that I côllected. I’ve watered the main one every day. I gave this other one away to someone who commented that it was dropping leaves almost immediately. They transplanted it into a bigger pot because under their care they thought the roots needed more room.

If you just collected it and the leaves fell off, it’s going through transplant shock. It will drop the leaves because the roots were damaged and it can’t support the leaves right now. Survival mode for it will be drop the leaves and focus its energy on healing the roots. Don’t over water it. As said above, you will induce root rot if it has no leaves to send the water to. Once it thinks it’s healed enough to support leaves, it will start to grow a few. Hopefully it will not use up all its energy before the new leaves can produce sugars it support the roots. Give it time to heal and see what happens. Be patient and don’t over water it.

It wasn’t collected via yamadori for clarity
