Today is a sort of milestone for me as I am now in possession of a premium bonsai stand. This is sort of a hybrid between made & purchased. I found this chunk of Desert Ironwood at the thriftstore for $20 today. It was obviously designed to be a stand but the top or base was missing. This was already carved into a rectangular peg so im certain there was a missing piece. Once I got home I started nosing around in my flower beds & found this piece of limestone that almost matches the shape/ size of the platform perfectly. This limestone is a remnant of the ocean floor that once cut the North American continent in 2 back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. I quickly went to work with a diamond core bit & created the perfect opening for a friction fit. Tomorrow I will finish deepening it so it slides in all the way & I will create 2 little copper wire feet to go under the limestone base to stabilize this without the use of a shim. I feel like the friction fit detail is perfect for this piece, if you have ever handled Ironwood it's literally as heavy as iron. Having the ability to break this down will definitely assist in transporting to bonsai shows when im an old man.
