Starting the refinement on this one. 981CF80C-8588-4A10-93DE-73E25F9386A3.jpeg

It will be going into a production pot next year so I can start on structural branching and ramification. I do think I am going to chop the straight section off the top and have the apex come back over the base next summer:

Opinions?

I posted this to my thread about nebari, but figured I should post it here as well.

Made this forest from seed, and read that hardware cloth makes a great base for a forest. I was hoping the steel mesh would also choke the roots and cause them to plate.

While it was a good start, the mesh didnt choke the roots and cause them to grow horizontally. They just grew through, and around the mesh making it a huge PITA to remove. I probably wont use the technique again.

I am curious to use some steel mesh under a larger tree this year to see how that works.

The roots did end up being pretty well ramified however. EDF2820A-CCC3-4B03-8793-E59D877908A1.jpeg

Perfect example of using a tile, that one huge root was redirected (1 year growth).

In the future with vigorous seedlings, i might attempt to cut roots mid season with some cuts in the soil. Some of the roots that sprouted above the tourniquet after a few months of growing got HUGE from only one growing season.

I got it off amazon for I think 15$ US shipped. It’s not holding up though it will probably be dust in a year or two. Here it is with a different tree (another broom style thats been layered). Not really worth it, which sucks because they are perfect.

I will have a good update on some of these this winter/spring

Needs work on stump but I will clean this summer when cutting back hard. There were a lot I didnt take pics of during repotting, unfortunately.

I will grab some more pics when I do some clean up in the next few weeks.

I drill a hole in the tile with a tile bit, and then use a stainless steel screw for small diameter trees or coated exterior screw for larger (to avoid any rust)
I always pilot the hole in the heartwood, and only try to get into the trunk an inch or so because I worry about CODIT from rust/ disease but its probably not truly an issue (never had a tree die, either)

Thanks for being specific about that because I've yet to find anyone who mentions how (screw, nail ?) or how deep they put it. It's a big part of the process and I'm glad to know the details. Pictures are great but I appreciate knowing what's hard to get in a photo. Thanks for that.

Am in the process of buying a Zelkova and should get it tomorrow so am trying to read 'all things Zelkova'. Just know that there are people 'out there' who are reading and appreciate you taking the time to write. Thank you

Awesome, I appreciate that. I have been after the original Japanese magazines that talk about zelkova brooms from back in the day but they are hard to come by. Good luck with you tree, and consider a thread to document progress.
