I bought this hinoki in 2016 for one dollar off of the Lowes Hardware 'dead rack'. It had a bunch of brown dead growth that I plucked off. Then I stuck it in a bonsai pot and practiced wiring on the lower branches. I didnt have any practical bonsai knowledge at this time except I knew that I needed to use a well draining soil mix becuase I had killed several other plants prior to this point.
In early 2020, I found a slightly smaller bonsai pot and I put it in there. I did some sort of wiring on the lower branches and it was so ugly. I knew the lowest branches was just a sacrifice and the other branches needed to come down a bit.

Here it is again instead 2020 with more wire and the lowest branch is gone. It finally looked decent.

In summer 2022 I brought it to a club workshop and a pro helped me set some branches and really took this to another level by shaping the apex. I was so proud and happy.

March 2023, I repotted into a smaller unglazed rectangle. I thought I was going to use the smaller pot on the left but I couldn't take off any more roots. Luckily, I had a back up pot.

This is where I initially stopped with the roots.

This is how far I cut the roots (hopefully not too much) before I changed game plans to the larger pot. It was pancake flat.

I tilted the tree to the left and wired it down, though not super well. This is what I came up with.
