I would venture to guess that the roots were bound together when the tree was young. Then the bound roots were trained with wire to produce the bends.

I tried a few experiments, years ago, with binding the roots of seedlings in an attemp to get their root masses to fuse together and produce taper. Never had much success getting the roots to fuse on most of the trees I experimented with so I gave up that quest.

Never thought of using them for exposed root style trees.
