Yesterday, I got to spend the day with a great friend and fishing buddy. He used to live in Richmond but moved to Charleston a few years ago so we don't see each other often. I've since gotten married and he's had 4 kids, so finding time to fish together has been hard. But, he got a pass for Father's Day to do what he wanted, and he made the 7 hour drive to Virginia to get his brookie fishing fix. We chose an old favorite stream in Shenandoah National Park and had a blast. Here are some pics of the day.

Nice tackle. Is that a Hardy on an Orvis rod? I had a 99 that was a great little spring creek rod but I splintered the tip a few years ago. I have a small collection of bamboo rods that I fish often. Mostly W&M Granger and a couple others. And 3 Hardy reels. I bought 2 Bougle's back in my single pre-bonsai hobby days, when I could afford such things.

VAFisher, thats actually a CFOIII that was purchased by my dad back in the 70's with that rod. The rod is a 8'6' 6 wt that behaves like a 5 wt. I'll use a 6 wt line if its a bit windy but the sweet spot for it is 5 wt. I have a few other Orvis bamboo rods and a slew of fiberglass. Although I have several graphite rods, I never really enjoyed using them. That Brookie you are holding is really a prize. Healthy fat fish all colored up!!!! What's not to like. And a native at that. My stream used to hold alot more brook trout until the logged a bunch of land upstream of that stretch and warmed the water up. Larger Browns have since moved up from the main river and set up house. Your stream is beautiful, don't tell anyone where it is.

If I'm not mistaken, those CFO reels were made by Hardy for Orvis. I could be wrong about that though. Either way, it's a nice reel. My Orvis rod was also rated for a 6 and I liked it with a 5. Miss that rod.

Ah, a fishing thread! I'll have to add to this once things get cooking. I went this past week to New Hampshire but got skunked. Still gorgeous.

I like to fly fish for these guys a lot

Just back from a long weekend fishing with my favorite buddies on my favorite trout stream. The fishing was solid, but not spectacular. The company and weather was awesome. We did get a damper on the weekend when a landowner across the river from our favorite spot started causing trouble, claiming the river was deemed non-navigable and that we were trespassing. The sheriff is backing the landowner and we were forced to relocate. We've been fishing that spot for 15 years. Hopefully, someone challenges this in court and let's a judge decide.

Anyway, here's some pics

This is my fish story, it's absolutely true, believe it or don't.
Back in the mid-seventies, before many of you were born and I was in my twenties, I was in Eastern Oregon out by Prairie City doing a precommercial thinning contact in the Malheur Natl Forest. There was a small stream that fed into the E. Fork Malheur River and off of this some ranchers had dug a ditch to bring water to a holding area for their cattle. I had to step over this ditch to get from our camp area to the thinning unit. One day as I was stepping over I saw something shoot up the ditch. I started sneaking up on the ditch to see if I could get a look at what it was. I got closer each day before the beasty took off. I eventually got to where I could straddle the ditch and look down at a 19" Eastern Brook Trout! Day by day over a period of two weeks I gradually got closer and closer till I was straddling the ditch bent over with my arms extended and my fingers just above the water. I could see the lunker just sitting in the current drifting back and forth as morsels came right to him. I was in position, my fingers close enough to feel the icy water. He drifted and went for a morsel and I lunged and grabbed his ass with both hands, lifting and tossing him into the woods, where I was able to collect my prize. Most delicious solid pink meat!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
