Early this year I was able to buy me some Habenaria radiata or White Egret flowers (as bulbs). These are terrestial orchids originally coming from Japan. I planted them in a mix of akadama, grit and some orchid-soil I bought in a garden center. Early summer the foliage appeared, and the two last weeks they are blooming. Because I think it's one of the most beautiful flowers I know, I wanted to try them as accent planting. This year I planted them in small plastic pots, but next year I will try some nice pots with them.

With a little imagination you can see the "Flight of the Heron". Here's the opening ceremony of the flower..

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Regards,
Hans

Once you have them in proper accent pots, make sure you share them with us again. I am sure they will accentuate any bonsai on display. The downside, I sure hope they don't steal the show.

As an accent, I can help but to think of the foliage, can you share a picture?

Here's a picture with foliage..

Looks a bit like grass. I know there is also a variagated foliage, and one with an white edge. But I haven't found these yet. The bulbs are small, so I think of using a small pot, or plant several of them in a bigger pot top have a maximum effect...

Regards,
Hans

Hi Hans,

I'm resurecting this post. I recently order some of these bulbs. Do you have any cultivation tips? I did some research and people were saying that it can be fussy and rot easily. What do you think?

Best regards,
Ryan

Well I got the bulbs. They are sprouting now. Anyone with hints or tips on how best to care for them? I have it planted in 95% haydite, and the rest is pine bark and spagnum moss. So it is in a very free draining soil mix.
