This Chinese Elm I posted in the thread here at http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?11176-Found-this-Elm-at-NDGC got an unepected makeover at the prompting of that old Mother Effer, Mother Nature.

A week ago before leaving Florida I seen the leaves looked a bit dull, thought it was the wet weather this spring. Made a mental note to defoliate it as I had planned on doing and address some branch problems I had seen when I got home with nice weather. I packed it up, came home to Ohio, left it inside my utility trailer for 2 days due to weather. I took it out and 95% of the foliage had turned grey or brown. The branches had webs and powdery mildew. Never knew you could have mites and powdery mildew at the same time?

These mites were reddish with an almost clear/orange end. I did the white paper test under one branch and hundreds fell off. I hosed the dead foliage off, treated it with insecticidal soap. I cut crossed branches and ones growing down and others that I was going to remove anyway, 50% of the branching.

This is what I have now.

I sure hope it comes back for me.

I've read about powdery mildew in rosemary...typically doesn't kill it. But can weaken it. So...hopefully it pulls through.

The mites were bad this late winter/early spring, I lost two junipers. Very disappointed that I didn't catch it sooner.

Good luck Ed...I hope it pulls through. Sometimes Mother Nature works wonders:)
