I made about a dozen cuttings off of a Ginseng Ficus I got gifted and they have taken great root in only a couple weeks. Will the roots from the cuttings ever get that big "Ginseng" root look like the mother tree or will they grow a normal trunk and root system? I think I remember reading somewhere that they will not get that bulge like root but for the life of me I can't find it nor do I remember where I saw it.

If I believe correctly the ficus is grafted onto those ugly roots, so the cuttings taken will not grow the fugly roots.

I have a cutting that blew up like the parent, looking at layering it for at least a temp fix.

Unless I'm mighty much mistaken on the point, "ginseng" is a genetic variant of Ficus microcarpa. If that's so, the cuttings are actually clones of the parent, and will show the same characteristics sooner or later.

with alot of ginseng ficus, the plant has been raised to expose the roots as part of the plant

Reviving old thread. So if I am careful to trim the root and keep it underground I will not have the fugly big root eventually mess up the bonsai?
