Can anyone recommend a heat mat? There are so many on Amazon and so many mixed reviews that I'm not sure which one to get. With thermostat or without? I was hoping a few members here have a favorite.
Depends on what you are looking to do. Seed starting can be cheap mats (they're all basically the same) called seedling heat mats. They have internal thermostats, and just keep the temp a few degrees above ambient. I also use these under my tropicals that stay inside during the winter. https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Wate...pID=41Mg5ca7DbL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
If you are looking to provide bottom heat for winter protection in a cold greenhouse/storage house, you'll need something with an external thermostat. ( These mats are called propagation heat mats.)That way you can decide what temp you want to keep the roots. I have several mats and thermostats, so some get warmer temps and some just above freezing. Cheap thermostats don't go down very far, like 60º or so. So you'll need something better. I've liked these digital ones, but dial ones as long as they get down to 30º are good too.
mats and thermostats.
Do shop around for these, as they can be found cheaper than these links sometimes.
Hope this helps, let me know if you'd like more information https://www.growerssupply.com/farm/supplies/prod1;gs_seed_starting;pg111511_111514.html https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KEYDNKK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I live in the tropics (Florida Keys) but I've had a hard time germinating a few types of seeds like Kapok and Peppercorn seeds and I was told to try bottom heat. I've tried many different techniques to get them to germinate without success. I've even tried right in the middle of the summer with no success.
If you can get some kapok cuttings I believe they are fairly easy to root. I haven't tried myself but I have a ceiba speciosa which is a close relative to the kapok tree (ceiba pentandra) and it does seem easy from cuttings.

Its just the principle now. I've been trying for a year. I HAVE to get a kapok seed to germinate. I'm starting to think i'm just getting bad seeds. It drives me nuts. And honesty, I really enjoy growing trees from seed.

I totally get it then. I had the same thing with achiote. I had the seeds and planted them over and over for 2 years. A few germinated finally but only one made it past the seedling stage. It's now in its third year in a pot and although it hardly grows and the leaves are always brown most of the year I'm just happy to have finally grown one of those darn seeds.
