Let me start by saying hello and I have been reading these threads for some time and finally decided to join. I am disabled and on a very limited income so I have to do things on the cheap. My wife bought me a trident maple bonsai from Brussells, I wired it then went into hospital for emergency surgery and she didnt know to take wire off. Now it has a big bulge scare on one limb but is still growing and is very helthy. How big should a limb be to air layer? Ill post pics asap. I am in zone 9 if I read correctly. I have many other questions as I have been dabbling with Bonsai for years but still now very little. What I have learned is from the forums here on Bonsai Nut.

Welcome aboard friend. You can pretty much air layer as soon as a branch hardens off and it sounds like the branch is way past that point. The question I have is why do you want to save the branch?

Thank you all. I know I posted the same question twice as Vin pointed out and Iam sorry I didnt mean to. as to why I dont want to save branch ? thats what I dont know. Im trying to up load pics now. I need some opinions as to what to do.

Hello Dreadnought. Nice to talk to a fellow Houstonian. If possible for you to come, we'd love to have you join us at the Houston Bonsai Society. We meet every Wednesday night in Hermann Park. Check the Facebook page or website for details. It's always free for new friends to attend a meeting.

In terms of the tree, it seems like a young branch - you could certainly air layer it or perhaps even take it as a cutting, but there's not a lot of benefit here unless you love propagating. I get rid of piles of branches that big every time I prune. What I'd really like to help you with more, is getting the tree strong and healthy. The foliage also looks a little sparse for this time of the year. Small leaves, sparse foliage, and brown tips are small signs that the tree may be a bit weak. When your tree is strong, it responds much better to things like air layering. So please bring your tree to the next club meeting and I'll take a look at it with you and give you some pointers for growing Tridents in Houston.

thank you all. I would like to come to a meeting but it will be at least 2 weeks before i can get there as i am scheduled for what I dearly hope is my last surgery Monday the 11th. If thats ok I will come after i recover from my surgery.

I meant first "Wednesday of every month" not "every Wednesday". My apologies. Next regular meeting is on May 4th. Rodney Clemons is visiting on April 22nd this month. I wish you the best on your surgery and hopefully you're recovered enough to make that - Rodney is great to watch and the demo tree will be raffled off. It's a pretty nice one.

And Rodney loves working with Tridents.
