Hi I found these seed cones in a flower pot from a plant I purchased from a local nursery that went out of business. They are neat looking but I don't know what type of tree they came from. I'm curious if it's a tree that'll work for bonsai and if the seeds are viable for planting and trying to grow. To get info on the tree and seeds I need to know what type. So was wondering if any if you have any idea on the species of tree this came from thanks

Dawn redwood(?)
I googled dawn redwood seed cones they do look like it. Wonder how they got in the pot I didn't see any of the tree there. Says not used in urban gardens because to big so wondering why would be at the nursery? Maybe I'll try planting some and see. Anyone interested in some there are 2 cones?

That is the metasequoia (dawn redwood) seed cone. I would bet half my trees on it.

Coincidentally, nearly half my trees are DR that I grew from seed. So I have seen a DR cone or two.

They are quite easy to grow from seed, provided you have quality seeds and a favorable climate.
