hey! I've had this jack pine all summer long with no problems. In the las week, though, it started to look more and more unhappy. Any suggestions? What should I do?
Hard to tell looks like it could be shedding old needles ? Some better pics would help not too familiar with jack pine I know my ausy pines do the same thing
I'm just going on assumptions here but let me guess.
You collected it this spring. The candles extended and needles grew out of them. Now when it's supposed to be pushing buds for next year it's dieing. If I'm correct,I've been there. What happened was it grew as a last ditch effort to save itself but it used up all reserves and has now run out of gas.
So what went wrong?
Pines are touchy trees to collect and the after care is key to their survival. Jack pines supposedly one of the touchiest.
Loss of roots. Pines depend on their roots. It's where they get their strength. Getting enough at collection time can be tough especially in the soils that Jack pines live. Sand. So the roots tend to run and there is usually a tap root growing straight down.
Then after collection people tend to over water the tree. It has a compromised root system. The Jack pines I've collected successfully that made it I let almost dry out completely before I watered. The best way to know when to water is to leave a few weeds growing in with them. When the weeds start to wilt I water them.
I'm sorry but I think it's kaput. Like I said,I've seen this before.
It might be a root issue. This is not a collected tree; I got it at a regular nursery. It is grafted and still in the nursery soil. Maybe I should try an emergency slip repotting, without disturbing the roots much?
how cold is it in denver right now? When I was first getting into pines I'd have a freak out every fall when the old needles would yellow and fall off pretty rapidly. It looks like it's all the older needles that are discolored. I don't pretend to have experience with Jack pine (outside of a few seedlings) but this seems like it could be old needles retiring
I hope. Right now it is seasonal: Upper 80s, lower 60s. But a couple weeks ago, we had lots of rain and temperatures in the 70s, which is unusual. This pine and a pomegranate starting yellowing out with it. I wonder if it is just a case of a confused tree or something more serious.
