Hi all,

I had this deshojo for 2 years, and I made the silly decision to put it on a rock and cover the exposed roots with dry spagnum moss. I did it in early spring when the buds were about to produce leaves. Now its may and still no leaves. Ive attached photos below (i've just watered the bonsai), Ive also attached one photo of what it used to look like:(

Do you all think there is any chance saving it?

Thank you!

P.S currently in London

The buds still look viable to me. Sometimes they'll pause leafing out when there's been a root disturbance. That's why people say to repot when buds are swelling but before leaves emerge.

That being said, if this is indoors, it will die.

its outdoors! and the buds have looked the same since repotting...

How cold did it get last winter.

I have Maples killed by the cold, which the buds will swell, look REALLY nice... but never break.. and die...

If this deshojo in a pot experienced around 20-25F, THIS could be your issue.

Have you been consistently transitioning it IN and OUTside...

The before AND after pic are both indoors..

If it got warm, buds STARTED to break (disturbing that Antifreeze layer), and THEN was placed below 33F... this will, sometimes, kill off new growth (bud maturity/Tree health depending)

hmm, didnt get that cold this winter, dont think it went under 25F. All the bonsai are left outdoors- the picture is of the balcony with a glass barrier which makes it look indoors in the picture. I only bring the bonsai inn to trim, which wouldnt be more than 1 hour I think.

Why dry sphagnum moss? I think that dry moss pulls all the moisture out of the roots... so how long before you watered it?
