Does it depend on the vigor of the tree?

Yes it does, as well as the degree of refinement that you are working towards in the design. My Ezo tends to extend over a period of time rather than all in a shorter period. It will also depend on the amount you wish to do at a particular time. Most years I plan on two or three sessions one or two weeks apart. Basically you need to adapt your process to the growth pattern and design you are working with.

Just as important for continuing refinement is the fall work, cutting back to inner thinner shoots in order to replace heavier shoots and managing extra bud growth at junctions to prevent undesirable thickening in the interior! Remember to wire out the new leaders to maintain form and pads if part of the design. Failure to maintain this aspect will ruin the refinement process rather quickly!
