I plan to grow this Procumbens Nana into a literati (rather than a cascade as usual for this subspecies) with twists in trunk, which will probably require more than a decade or maybe two. At this stage is it sufficient to tie one of the branches to a stick and wire it at autumn? Do I have to remove gradually bottom branches as well to encourage upright growth?

Yes, stake it up. You don't have to completely remove them, but you at least need to trim the lower runners so that your leader is always your most dominant branch.

Are you sure that is a procumbens nana though? I can't see well enough but it doesn't really look like it.

This was what the vendor told me, but nursery owners happen to know their inventory wrong here🙃. I am uploading photos of the foliage in a more close view. It is all needles

Thanks for your replies, great to know that before making a decision about styling.

The needles grow in spirals. I guess there are 3 needles in each whorl and they are pretty long.

Thanks all. I'll wait to see how fast it grows. If it grows slowly, I will make it a small cascade. If it is a fast grower, I can try growing it as an upright I guess.

Communis or some kind of blue point variety.

Nick is right about staking it up.
