Can someone offer any clues about what this tree/bush might be? I know it’s deciduous.

Hybiscus syriacus, we have one in the yard.

Althea, or Hibiscus syriacus was the first thing to come to mind, but in the Azores, the climate allows one to grow many species I've never seen. If it is Hibiscus syriacus, it should flower for much of the summer with hibiscus like flowers that average around 2 to 4 cm diameter.
