Interesting Mirai post on Tom Benda

I love Benda's stuff, but those prices are absolutely crazy. Back when Benda's stuff would show up on Facebook auctions, shohin sized pots would go for about $120 or so. Granted those were plainer pots, but still. I would probably order from the European Bonsai Collective if I really wanted his stuff. Sorry for the side ramble.

It's a very nice pot, but those pot are a little silly priced. I dob't get the inflated prices but then again, they don't tailor to the average joe. I see a forest planted on that slab/pot

$2250.00?
That would buy all of my trees and pots and tools and dirt.
Must be a space pot.
Because that price is out of this world.

I like the pot a lot but the price is nuts. I figure it's one of those things Ryan doesn't need to sell, but if someone really wants to buy it he'll let it go for a high price.

Although I wish work like this was more affordable, I see why Ryan puts prices like this on work by truly accomplished artists. My kids drawings will not command the price of a Picasso, even though there may by times the average person couldn't tell the difference. And my Camry will inevitably be passed by Porches and Ferraris. If the market can support the price than it's good for the artist, and it elevates the craft and the art form. Not everyone caters to those of us who drive a Camry :) There are people that can and will pay these prices, and this means those of us without crazy amounts of money don't get one. I will always continue to support the artists that create work to the point that I can afford, and if my means increase, so will the value of my pottery collection. I do the best that I can, but someone will likely always be able to do better. I love some of the interesting structural and architectural work that Tom does, and maybe some day I can see on of my trees in one of his pots.
