Itioigawa Shimpaku

I've been looking for a good shimpaku to do a semi cascade or cascade from but didn't find one yet. You must be better at navigating the nether regions then me. Do you have any pics of yours would love to see them.

Ben

No pics yet, may start a new thread to keep track of progression.
Did you see Gary's kishu cascade for the show? Freaking awesome...
I'll be there early really early lol.

He has another inside the fenced area a bit smaller, I think I will be doing taxes soon next year lol...

I saw it I wondered how much it was I figured maybe 2.5-5k are you gonna buy it? Great tree.

I didn't ask him because it's more developed and really want to avoid finished trees, now the 3 shimpaku on the right at front big specimens great price and raw that I can jump on.
Am sure you saw the itoigawa in front as you enter 15gal nursery pot that I want but can't at the moment.

Yep I saw that one, I have my eye on a pine he has there. But i'm waiting to see what I find at the GSBF saturday first. Didn't mean to hijack this thread with info on Chikogu-en. ;)

Might be wiring this one this year. Bored winter doodle.

Just a quick health update. I believe the second picture is the front/angle I originally wanted to work with. I'm going to remove the wire this weekend so I can rework it next summer. Looks like itoigawa to everyone? Jk.

Hi Tom, can't wait to see you work on this one. Cheers.

Am thinking copper also for my 2 itoigawa's but don't have any lol will need to buy or make my own.

Ha, I actually need to get some too. If I had more time I'd probably find the thread about annealing wire yourself but it would be easier for me to buy it.

Heard Jim Gremel has the best copper wire at good price to, will check with him soon.

I like the virt. Although this is a small tree, there are some rather big challenges. To turn this into a nice bonsai with good proportions, a lot of the foliage and branches will need to be removed. However, since there isn't a lot in general, the challenge will be to keep the tree healthy while simultaneously creating a nice style. It looks like there are 3 branches. My advice might be to remove one and keep 2. 1 branch for the main tree and one branch in the back. Even leaving 2 branches might be too much. However, for health reasons, I would definitely leave 2.

This is a very common problem with many junipers. The issue of the trunk not being large enough to sustain the visual amount of foliage. However, with some fine wiring and if very small pads can be achieved, although proportions might be a little off, the tree can still look very nice. Perhaps this is a good candidate to work on for the upcoming Feb. 22 meeting. ;)

I'm glad you said this, I was actually thinking this might be a good one to work on with your tuteledge. As long as it looks as healthy as it was when I dropped it off in November I think styling on the 22nd is a go.

I think it will possibly be a one branch tree and we'd have to get creative. I'm hoping that this styling willset the bones right so the pads can be built with time. I'm really looking forward to our first meeting.

Sounds good, I look forward to seeing what image this tree has hidden. :D

Rob

I like it so far. It's a shame you had some difficulty but it looks like it sprang back very well.

Today at our inaugural meeting, Rob (October) helped me put another styling on the tree. I learned a lot on how he works his junipers, and can't thank him enough for the styling assistance today. The tree looks better in 3d and I don't take the best pictures, but I think it's on its way now. Needs to fill in again this year and maybe I'll get to touching up the jins at some point.
