Hmmm...
Any chance you could get it to an unheated garage-type environment? I would still strongly recommend trying to 2-step it.. over the course of 6 days.. spend the days in the “cold” of the cool garage...(30-40F) and get a TAD more protection at night.. (40-50F).. then AFTER six days.. he could live in that “garage-climate” or even COLDER (assuming you did not recently disturb the rootmass) until spring.

this would be IDEAL.
As far as your question...
...well.. yes.. the plant is seemingly wasting resources on these tips, because in an indoor “space”, plants like this simply cannot internally “manufacture” the amount of “sugars/carbs

“ they need... buuut I’m not EXAAAACTLY sure what to recommend as far as cutting them back..
..because, now here’s MY thinking, I would be worried that If I pruned anything back, the tree MAY not have the “resources” to “react” in the most desirable fashion...
That’s why I think there are so many views... and so FEW answers to your inquiry...
‘Cause...we’re not really sure...

Someone will know, just not I, nor any here before I.
My recommendation stands (Find a way to “step it” into “cold-frame/garage” conditions)... I like this tree, and want it to do well.
