The pics above are a nice guide but please note that there are many, many more registered JM varieties so the pics do not give a definitive guide to what is available. Some of the varieties shown in the last 2 pictures are Acer japonicum varieties so not really what we would class as 'Japanese maple'.
Also remember that JM leaf color changes through the growing season so any guide is only as good as the time of year it was taken.
 
Cool charts, but the potential misleading thing about them is the thought some people might have that you might be able to identify a Japanese maple cultivar by looking at its leaves. You can't. You can only identify a cultivar by its provenance. No provenance, no cultivar - no matter what it looks like.

However it is very useful if you want to use it as a shopping guide. "Oh that leaf looks cool - I should go to a nursery and buy that cultivar".
