after bud selecting on this guy in september it pushed out quite a few needle buds. I'm wondering if bud selecting in the fall of the second year will trigger more needle buds to push out than if i hadn't cut. when growing small trees, these low buds are very useful.

my colander order from hotelrestaurantsupply.com arrived. the 8" ones have a 7" inner diameter. i was hoping for blue, so that b@#$% karma sent me red. 😡

plenty of mycorrhizae. 👍
the seedling cutting technique does not guarantee a nice radial root base. had to wire these two main lines together into the trunkline to be exposed later.
i wish i used 2.5mm instead of 3. my fingertips hurt and i broke a bud off 😥
heres a video of the operation if anyones interested:

Darth,

I have been following your progress with the JBP seeds (on here and YouTube) and you have inspired me to grow my own this spring (I had the seeds stratifying over the winter). I do have a quick question: What type of substrate did you use in the second photo on 6/14/19? I am trying to decide which kind of substrate to use once it is time to plant the seeds. Thanks for the help and the videos!

out of the frindge and after 6 days in water on a heatmat. can i wait till they stick their tongues out to plant them, or will they drown?

I personally would plant them
thinking the same. i was just trying to get visual confirmation of crackage before planting. the paper towels they've been in all winter were a little moldy. i washed the seeds off with hydrogen peroxide and used new paper towels and bags when i first refrigerated them, but mold still grew. anyways, i didn't want the tails coming out in that moldy environment, so i just tried water in a cup instead of throwing the whole bag of seeds on the heatmap straight out of the fridge

here's three seeds that didn't come up last year, but weren't dead. since they popped so early this year, i was going to experiment with double cuttings. after doing the 1st cut they grew roots just fine. now that they're pushing out again i cut even closer to the first needles. on one seedling the stem was almost brown to the needles. i think i could have cut a mm below the needles and it'll still root. or not. we'll see if they even survive
