Hello Bonsai Nuts, I live in southern cal Los Angeles area. Is it ok to prune off unwanted branches on JM’s this time of year considering where I live. These JM’s are all pre bonsai. Or is it best to wait until spring. I am running the risk of some reverse taper and swelling in some unwanted areas. Please help.

Larger branches should be removed as the tree breaks dormancy or during the growing season... sap loss due to spring time pruning can be mitigated by pruning the roots at the same time. Now... just before or after the tree drops its leaves... is a great time to be cutting back small branches.

Makes sense thank you.

But isn’t there the risk of excessive bleeding or sap loss during that time?
The tree will be mostly dormant from now till spring in your location. So no risk to wait. If you do some root work to improve the nebari at the same time as pruning the sap loss will not be an issue! Just do the roots first.

Hi just to clarify on the root work since the tree is mostly dormant from now till spring, can the root work be done now or should that also wait till spring before buds break?

Sorry, thought that was clear! In the spring as the buds are swelling.

lol 🙄 you’re right sorry I guess I just read that too fast. Thanks for your help.
No worries, I often do the same thing. If you can include pictures or age information you will find that responses can be more specific and helpful. What we do, when we do it and why we do it changes with the stages of development and refinement. The work is not just based on species or location. For examples with young maples in development, some root work can be advisable very year for the first four or five years in development for best results. Older pre- bonsai will often go two or three years without root work.

dont do this. It will bleed too much. Do it now and seal the wounds
Maybe read what other people said too. If you work on the roots (which you can only do in spring since the roots can’t freeze after you work on them) first then it won’t bleed too much.
