Coral bark? Do you know if they are grown From cuttings or seedlings? If from seed, they are probably some sort of miss- mash... A "mutt" of some sort... as JM cross breeds with all species, forming an almost unique variety every time they go to seed it seems, if they are in close proximity to other JM.

They are saying seedlings. They are here at rendezvous but no one knows the specific variety.

Yep, they are mutts! Doesn't mean that is bad... Just that you won't have a fancy name to tell people when they ask what kind it is. As Dave says, it is "just" a Japanese Maple!

I think sometimes people get a little too hung up on the named varieties- myself included- unless you just want a specific characteristic, cork bark for instance, the ones grown from seed and the "regular" old green JM are easy to work with generally, have vigorous roots and are beautiful trees! A lot of the special varieties are kind of wimpy by comparison.

Thanks guys. I was checking for a friend here. Sad to have to leave this place. Picked up a few Arakawa JM, JBP, and Sargents Juniper pre bonsai stock. Korean hornbeam, kingsville boxwood, and satsuki azalea (Kobai and Azumakagami) bonsai. My backseat looks like a jungle.

I would have guessed 'Sango kaku/coral bark' too.
For what it's worth, these are Sango Kaku JMs that I found at a local nursery....they look a bit different

Goodness! It is a forest in there! You musta dropped some coin at that place... It looks like quality stock though- you can see vigorous pine candles sticking up, a few chunky trunks and some bright green, super happy Juniper foliage... I hope we get a thread or two showing what you bought in more detail.

I've got a few Sango kaku in my yard...it was the closest I could come up with when looking at the pictures of the seedlings. Great color and strong grower...love them.

Wasn't too bad of a financial hit with the discount and buying mainly pre bonsai stock. I was excited as hell though as it was the first bonsai nursery I'd been too since having my first roadside bonsai tree at age 8. Interestingly, I bought it on a family vacation road trip to Florida, passing through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, and was mesmerized by the huge tall pines (loblolly I think) that lined the highway. That's when my fascination and appreciation of nature and specefically trees was sparked. It was cool to see those same type trees on this drive that sparked my interest as a young kid. Maybe like a born again Deist. :)

If these crazy tornadoes, flooding, and outrageous acts of nature continue in Oklahoma I might move out here. It's beautiful here. Our Oklahoma trees get whacked by tornadoes every 2-3 yrs and never get as magnificent as these out here. A tornado barely missed my house and kids again as I was in Olive Branch. It's getting very old after 36 yrs of being an 'Okie'

I'll start a post when I get home tonight with the trees I got. I pruned them a little playing in the hotel room.

Are they good on their own roots? I have a nursery here with a ton of them (grafted) but I wasn't sure if they do well after being layered.

And Rodney Clemons has to be the nicest least pretentious artist in bonsai. Great guy and teacher. Bjorn was stellar as well.

Funny, I still haven't met Rodney; our running joke is I don't exist. I've talked to him by phone, text, email, and Facebook. I coordinated his 2 Birmingham workshops, and he's even toured my garden, but I've been out of town both times and haven't had a chance to meet him. People love him...Bjorn too. Bjorn will be here Wednesday-Thursday and we'll be working on some trees in the porch. Can't wait.

Glad you had a successful trip Chad!
