This is not an official " not a contest" tree , as I missed the deadline , but since I'm new to bonsai I figured I might as well pic a tree to track my progress over my first four years of bonsai. This is an azalea, unknown variety, sub Urban yamadori from a 1950s house being torn down . I have no idea how old this plant is. Dug up late February, and been somewhat neglected since I got a head of myself in my rush to become a bonsai master lol. It needs to be repotted , planned on doing that today but it was in the 90s here in KC and I didn't feel like crushing lava rock today. Most likely a mix of pea gravel , peat moss , perlite , maybe some red lava rock and maybe some sand. Same container probably but after a root pruning .
I'm unsure of which branches to keep and which to cut... I was thinking I could maybe take some large cuttings but since I already took some from another azalea 2 days ago I want to wait and see how they do first.

Could just be the picture quality, but a lot of that looks dead. I would have cut it way back on collection to match, what I assume as that container doesn't look very big, was a big root reduction. I would then let it recover for a couple of years and just focus on keeping it alive. I fear that repotting it if you only collected it in February may kill parts or all of it.

I wouldn't do anything to it besides trying to keep it alive with water and shade. This looks like decent potential and it needs to just be kept alive for at least a yr till anything is really done to it.
