Just a thread for playing around.

I got this kishu on the cheap at a club auction. Took some time to twist up some branches to air layer in a couple/few years. Plan is a large rock planting at some point.

Will probably put it in the ground in the spring to use as a stock plant for cuttings and scions and the like.

Good work.
Wiring ends of branches on the stock tree then layering the successful ones later was something I started doing around 8 years ago. It allows you to get roots exactly where you want them, avoids the straight section at the base which happens when wiring and bending rooted whips in pots. Also saves breaking rooted plants. If one of these branches breaks or dies from overenthusiastic bending it does not matter so much.
You also get the advantage of fast growth while they are still attached to the stock plant.

Today I wired and bent some long stems then put them in as pre-wired cuttings. They'll be smaller but I can make more plants quicker than layering
