I recently had the opportunity to style this tree, coming from Chikugo-En a couple years ago. (This isn’t my tree.)

I didn’t wire out every tip and it could really benefit from some backbudding to build out the structure. I’ve already received some input on the apex as well. “It looks better in person” is usually an excuse. That said, ...I have all the branches laid out to receive photons and the next styling really should produce something special.

Now I hope to find a pot for it.

Lately I’ve been noticing that on first styling at least, my trees look best from above.

Here it is from February of this year. I’m planning on removing the wire this month.

@WavyGaby , here’s the kiyozuru I was talking about in PM.

The latest picture I have of it is from Nov 22 2023, attached here.

Looking good. Mine grew really hard over the last 6 weeks or so, tons of foliage, but the branches are not bulking up.

I let it grow all year and it’s pretty bushy right now. Have a workshop with Julian Tsai I’m planning to take this one to, along with an itoigawa (that’s not as bushy). Here it is as of today.

Also, when I started this thread I mentioned this wasn’t my tree. It is now.

Julian gave me a lot of feedback on this one and where it should go. There were ample backbuds in the apex and less the further down it went. The tree needs to be reduced by 30-40% and should be able to make strong progress toward that by summer. That was pretty in keeping with what I thought.

Great workshop. This one is set up for success.

I want to see what you do with the Itiogawa, too. Will you graft it?

First order of business is getting it healthy. He even mentioned that grafting chances were low in its current state so I'll see what I can come up with in the meantime.

Reorganizing my garage and just finished a 2-day install of an LED shoplight, so I wanted to take advantage of the new arrangement for a picture.

FYI: That tuft on the left of the apex stands out as much in person as it does in the picture.
