Hi All,

Here is a progression thread for an arakawa maple shohin. It was originally purchased from @MACH5 in the summer of 2017. I felt very fortunate to get a maple from him. Although it is an arakawa species it has not barked up much yet, although it does have the deep set leaves. Here are photographs from Sergio in the Winter of 2017 so you can see the leafless structure. The main trunk chop was healed, but some of the secondary ones still hadn't closed at the time.

I struggled to keep the internodes really small and probably over fertilized it given the oversized pot. To that end, I felt that the first branch on the right was too long before branching as you can see here.

So, I went ahead and approach grafted a new branch from the back side.

Today I went ahead and decided to repot it. There were still some thicker roots that I worked back and also flattened the root base further. There were lots of nice good feeder roots. I chose a Roy Minarai pot that I picked up at the Shohin Show in Kannapolis. I was just barely able to squeeze it in. The pot looks a little deeper in the photograph as I used my camera phone so some of that is just the perspective.

There is clearly a lot of work to do on the secondary branches and the nebari will need further work, possibly even with root grafting. But, it is a really enjoyable project. I hope you all enjoy. I will continue to post updates.

I question it's identity being Arakawa, but it's definitely an awesome maple. Doesn't even have leaves typical of rough bark Acer p. Thank you for sharing!

You've had this thing for almost two years and are just now posting ito_O;)???

Regardless of cultivar, this thing is nice!

That's a really nice tree, good purchase. Looks like you're doing a great job, keep it up!

You've done great with this one Lars. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering how it was doing.
