I have no idea why lowes was selling jap maples like this, it wouldn't be a usable landscape tree but I'm not complaining, I love the shape and the trunk movement, I'm working on correcting some nebari issues, but other than that I need to develop branches and ramification and it'll be a good looking bonsai. The base of the trunk has a nice graceful curve to the left that you can't really see in the pic.

What I like best is that I don't see the graft at the base.

PS In my opinion it worth spelling of the word, "Japanese" instead of "Jap" as a sign of respect for a great culture... for what its worth.

thanks, barry.

one'd think in this day and age, folks needn't be reminded about stuff like this

best wishes, sam

You would think that in this day and age, no one would be so sensitive. These are different times, not 1945. The term was just used as an abbreviation or as a description of what type maple he had. When I read it, I only read Japanese Maple. I have even seen it written on trees in nurseries, Jap. maple, acer palmatum. All of this PC stuff has really gotten out of hand, it seems, at times, that we are living in the United States of the Offended.

Sure, the folks who would be really offended at the term are dead or dying but some are still very much alive. Some of those people in the U.S. faced not only this epithet, but internment at American camps. Why not make the effort to press-- what five more keys to avoid it? Or just use "JM" -- which one less key...

FWIW, it's not 1966 either, but terms from that period live on and are hardly acceptable now (back then then those words weren't used by decent people not out of some sense of "political correctness," but just plain manners)

That's what was suggested here. Use some decent manners. We do bonsai. It has Japanese origins. You're going to run into this...

All PC aside, pretty nice stump. I'd probably agree with Poink on this one and say chop it to the first branch though. That's a great distance with no taper.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Abbreviations are fine, but they require a period. Avoiding offense is not political correctness. It's manners.

FWIW, I'd cut the first branch off, use the second as the new apex and lose everything above that...

that would give you a pretty decent graceful frame to start with.

Me, I will do the opposite. Leave the first branch and remove the main trunk above it. I will also reduce the remaining branch.

The reason I would go with the second branch is that the trunk has some movement after the first, but in any case, the tree needs to be reduced.

Sorry, cannot see it being better that way than keeping the lower branch. They are miles apart potential wise in my eyes.

while a gentle reminder is definately in order to protect anyones feelings, I think that innocent usage of these slangs in ignorance is a good sign that we as a people are forgetting any negative feelings.

While we are talking about manners, how about assuming the best about others and if you are really that upset simply send a PM as opposed to hijacking their thread to scold them about what was clearly an innocent thing.

By the way, nice tree...

is the pot calling the kettle black?

LOL! See! Even the most innocent attempt to prove one's point can make them an "accidental racist". I am certain you meant no offence Sam. You did, however use a racist (in the view of some) epithet in your post.

I would also cut to the first branch and grow that as my new leader. It just appears like there is some weird taper/reverse taper issues between the first and second branch.

Seriously? This thread is insane. Everyone needs to get real. The guy meant absolutely no disrepect when he posted his maple. Lay off.

This is a tree that would improve tremendously with a 3 or 4 years growing in the ground. I would chop right above the first branch, spread the roots on a board and plant the whole thing in a growing bed. Its a little late in the season for that now as the leaves are already opening.
