Hi- one of my Japanese maples is looking sad, not sure why others seem to do well. It was fine a few weeks ago. I got aphids in my garden I generally just leave them. This year we had dry spells in March and April. I watered more often recently.
- was really caring for repotted pines. Any insights? How should I water maple - constant moist?

Thanks!

Looks like Astropurperum?
Strange thing, I had the the same happening and it started two weeks ago.
All of my other maples are doing fine as well.

I repotted my maples this spring. Thats all I can think of as a cause of this happening.

Red maples are more sensitive that the green ones. Maples best be kept a bit more on the moist side.

But to wet will cause roots to rot. So water when the top of the soil starts to dry out.

It looks like you have the tree in a pretty organic soil. I would not keep that “constant moist”, but would rather let the soil dry out a bit in between waterings.

It's also looks overpotted which keeps it even wetter

Thanks very much. I got a stick in the there to mark moisture. Would you agree we let the top inch dry first then water? The soil is a bit better than what it looks. I repotted it and used a mix of organic soil, top soil and perlite covered it with moss from the garden. I fertilised it recently and maybe let it on the dry side for too long during recent dry spells. I do not quite understand Japanese maples yet- why they change so quickly? Are they that fragile? Any tips will be great thanks!

When a maple does this in spring, it is a death sentence in my experience. More likely if the pot is kept on the ground during winter. I keep mine off the ground sitting on wire mesh.
