I think the roots froze and they didn't recover...That sucks. What happened?
Should I wait a few weeks until the BC has fully needled out before I resume nicking the scar? Pic from today. Needle buds are popping out everywhere.![]()

Anyone have thoughts on this design I'm considering? Carving this left side down a half inch or less to give the appearance of a more storm damaged apex? I'm thinking It would break up the "clean break" look, and add some character.

Huh. That sucks. My BC along with my larches was a solid block of ice for a few weeks. Here's the Larix, and 2mm under the water you see is solid ice. I tried to lift it to dump the water and it was frozen to the ground. BC had more mulch on it so there was no picture to take.I think the roots froze and they didn't recover...
Thanks! I got a taste of that last year, seeing the wire bite in two weeks after it was applied. I believe I ended up leaving it on for 6-7 weeks and I did have some bad bite marks when I removed it. They heel up fast too.Keep a close watch on that wire. BC can really swell quickly and wire bite happens fast.
I still have the new one, and that's going into a nice pot this year. It will get covered storage over the winter with most of the others...Huh. That sucks. Sucks that you lost them but I'm not sure freezing caused it. I'd just like to know for future winters.![]()

Is now a good time to cut the pigtail branches back? Do you use a saw or pruners? The branch on the left is close to 2.5 inches thick and the one on the right is 2" thick. The tree is 23" tall from soil to top of the truck. Not until next spring. You want them a bit bigger to form a pleasing line to the V cut. Look at the Rock below. While the tree is far from finished, at least, even when viewed from the flat side of the V cut, the top branches do not have the abrupt reduction.
I use a saw for mine. Your tree is looking really good though. Is now a good time to cut the pigtail branches back? Do you use a saw or pruners? The branch on the left is close to 2.5 inches thick and the one on the right is 2" thick. The tree is 23" tall from soil to top of the truck.

Based on what I see in your pictures the tree expended a lot of energy to grow what we see. give it 3 weeks to gather some energy back then chop.Is now a good time to chop the branches back?
Correct. It was covered in needle buds popping out everywhere , down low at the base, underneath shedding bark, hundreds of them like it got a breath of fresh air after a deep dive underwater, & exploded in energy. Thanks CR.Based on what I see in your pictures the tree expended a lot of energy to grow what we see. give it 3 weeks to gather some energy back then chop.
It is ready for whatever you want to do to it so long as you keep up with the excellent care. If you cut with a saw, you may want to use a sharp knife to cut a ring through the cut mark before sawing to prevent bark tear-out.Looks like it's ready to go, Cut about six inches from the trunk? Straight saw chop/cut? Any advice is welcome.
