Munching insects prevention, Garlic

In another thread there was discussion on using garlic powder against aphids.

The reasoning is simple. Garlic is used as an insecticide in organic farming. The smell keeps many insects away. As such, I started using garlic powder in my pots. The thinking being that on the one hand the smell alone will keep many insects away, but also hoping that the good stuff is absorbed by the plant and the leaves become unpalatable.

A few years. Not counting them.

I rarely see anything munching my trees since.

I tried using a garlic solution to keep slugs etc away last year. Made zero difference. If it's working for you, I might try again.

Dunno. I do not seem to have them in my garden. At least, I hardly ever see them.

Whether it works or not.. It might also just be a skewed observation. I have little problems with pests on my trees. I hear of what everyone has to do to keep them at bay, I assume it is something I do. I have not had big infestations since I started using the garlic. My conclusion: Must be. But maybe my trees are just treated in a way that makes them less prone. Better overall health, exposure to the cold weather as it comes etc.

As unhelpful as it is, Ryan Neil has always said something, something he got from Kimura is the water and health of the tree. Keep a tree healthy and fit, and it will not succumb to pests and most fungus.
Like I said, unhelpful, as we all are trying our best in that scenario but still, good to know.

I'd be interested to try it, if any of my trees get any pests this year.

The aphids are in the roses, as always. Might even try some garlic powder on them and just see what happens. I bought a house and it has 3 potted roses. They have become experiments.

I haven't experienced any problem with insects and I have never thought about the use of garlic to cope with insects.
Do you use the garlic powder which you can buy at the supermarket like the one in the picture below?

No! What I use is very different!

It has to be german, of course. And mine comes in a baggie like so:

My garlic plants were killed by aphids and thrips.
Same goes with pepper; most insects are either resistant or lack the neurotransmitters that evoke a response in us humans.

Not much aphids in my yard either. Usually half of the cherry tree is covered with them, last year there were next to none.

I mix garlic powder and pepper in water and spray roses, cherries and other plants and trees with it. Works well. But the ants hate me for it. Ants...nature's livestock farmers. And i've got a lot, I mean a LOT of ants in the garden. And they just keep moving the aphids. Messing up our terrace, tiles sagging. So, aphids and such, garlic and pepper. Slugs and snail, dark beer in old jam pots (at least they die drunk and singin'). All nature friendly. But...how to get rid of all the ants nest??

Got some chives mixed in with roses. Allium helps keep pests away.
Also, if you are a super hot pepper grower and coneseur, (habanero and scorpion) you can make an extract that will help when sprayed.

We used garlic cloves to chase away our mole infestation. They didn't like the garlic, so they would just push it out of their holes and we ended up with garlic sprouting all over the yard.

So... cinnamon to keep fungus away and garlic to keep the bugs at bay?... my trees are going to be delicious!

You can make your own with fresh garlic too. Never tried it myself.
