My plant !

For example. I read that Jade is a great indoor plant. And then i saw that it can be made too look kinda like a tree, though not my best style, it is an option. Are there others ?

Based on wiki indoor plants, and yahoo image search, these are the plants I am now looking at:

Ficus benjamina
Tamarindus indica
Jade good if mature
Benjamin ficus
Portulacaria afra
Schefflera arboricola (not a big fan)

Now, if I buy a cheap 10 $ plant I imagine it will look nothing like the yahoo pictures. They will just look like a 10$ plant.

The trunk size, it would seem, makes the biggest difference in the look. I imagine this is the hardest thing to attain and there for a thick trunk costs the more. (50$ or 100$+).

Which one of the above will be the quickest to grow to a level where it looks somewhat like a tree ? I do not feel like waiting 100 years. Nor do i want to muy an expensive one as it will probably die on me anyways (its indoor under a 1700 lume 6400k light in a DRY area).

Any suggestions ?

Quickest way? Buy a tree with a large trunk and go from there. But I will warn you, you can't really rush this hobby.

I have Fukien Tea tree that i keep indoors right now, but it is tropical, and even when the weather warms up this spring it will go outside when the temperature stays above 50 degrees. Even though it's inside i have done all the right things to make sure where i have the tree has the approiate conditions for said tree.

1) LED lights over the tree
2) humidity tray underneath (humidity around the tree is 69%)
3) air flow (very small tiny fan blowing across the tree)

This is a great tree and its doing very well, but this tree can and will be finicky, but if the right conditions are met, mine seems to do fine

I totally understand this. My interest in bonsai started years ago where I took the life of my first bonsai. From there I decided to start with outdoors.

In the mean time I made made space for a bonsai while doing my renovations. Knowing that one day the time will come that I will be able to buy/buy a nice bonsai. This day is no where close.

Today I bought a Benjamina and jade. they are young and lack any characteristics of a bonsai.
But it will be interesting to see if they can grow and if what happens when i pull out a pair of scissors.

Where my inpatients grows is that i have empty space on my shelf and woudl like something somewhat decent their.

So i buy cheap 5 $ plants try to understand why they die and try to fix the problem. With the new light i think these baby's will survive.

Like I said they look nothing like bonsais with their thin trunks. But I can kinda picture a mini forest where their are small plants and smaller ones under that canopy.
Almost like a doll house forest ?

Anyways it doesn't really matter. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions about how i can make a pretty set up fairly quickly while I learn. Is it too early to pull out my scissors for these plants ? I'm thinking maybe cut 20% off the bottom of the BEN and shorten 2 branches on the top.. and leave the jade alone

from there I would repot them or have their pots hiding under a peice of foam or wood. then i could try to add in some grass under the canopy. Maybe have these growing on some kinda cliff.

Again. It is the only way to make them look pretty. while learning enough to one day have a bonsai.

thank you for any advice

Tamarind will not work, a true Tropical , needs full sun.

These are Sub-Tropical - Fukien Tea, Serissa, Chinese Elm, Murraya p., Podocarpus from China -

they can handle temperatures under 55 deg.F but above 32 deg.F [ 12.8 to 0 ] but 42.8 deg.F ] 6 deg C ] is probably better as Neli, in Namibia works at that temperature and has no problems.

Get the book - Indoor Bonsai - Paul Lesniewicz - Library or Amazon - has information for indoor growing of the above trees.

Good Luck and
Good Day

Ill read through those blogs. The guy seems hard core though with MH lights and all.
My benjamina and especially my jade seem to love this light! I see a a lot of growth. Not sure what to do with them now?

Im thinking of pruning down the benjamina again to get a better shape

maybe unroot the jade seperate the 3 stems and put each in a small 1 oz pot.
Maybe down the line it can be used as decor under the benjamina lol

Tried to use some leaves to clone the benjamina, doesn't seem to work. Any one have luck with that?

wana try to clone the jade too. I hear they are easy to clone.

If I can clone them I can grow a bunch and experiment with them/use them as decor.

Just saw this searching for lemon cypress (goldcrest) how is the cypress doing? You will know if it's a lemon. The foliage smells like lemon when brushed or cut :) I'm just trying to figure one out that I got from a nursery recently.
