This was the gun I purchased before Thanksgiving weekend and went thru background check being part of the 61 percent increase in gun sales in California for that week versus last year. I picked up the gun on Dec. 3rd. and went that weekend to shoot with all the other guns and long guns. I have always wanted a gun with a custom wooden grip.

This is the gun as purchased.

Great shooting pistol, fairly heavy with all metal frame and hardly any recoil. Shot 300 rounds thru it with not one jamb, FTF or FTE. The gun comes as a range kit with a shorter, 3" barrel making it look just like a James Bond Walther PPK.

This is what I did. Grips made from Oregon myrtle wood. Carved in some thumb rests and one for the trigger finger on the other side.

That's a beautiful piece Al! The wood handle is a dream...

Wow...that's crazy of the long wait. I had my gun background check in a matter of minutes. But that piece was worth the wait.

Nice work! I find it amusing that the original had so much checkering as it is a 22LR. Looks good now and very handy - must be a nice change from the heavier calibers to carry as well.

Dang Al! You sure have a lot of weapons... When the Zombies attack, I am coming to the "bunker"!
Wait... Do you HAVE. Bunker too or is that just the name of your blog? You should totally get one if not..,

Well if Obama gets his way, you'll be waiting ten days like us as well as having magazines reduced to 10 rounds. If gun control is so important then Secret Service should carry ten rounds also.

That piece didn't come that way, I made those grips!

I have never understood checkering. What a waste of a good piece of wood. No one drops a gun cause the handle was not rough....

Thanks for the Christmas card, my wife and I were touched.
Merry Christmas

The only way for gun control is to place more folks with guns carrying CCP. If we have more good guys out and about when things turn south...less victims die. We now have Sheriffs stating the same opinions. They can't get there quick enough. There ia going to be casualties. Less keep that count down...

I thought you may jave made those grips...pretty sweet. Makes it extra special its custom done by you.

I have only ever seen that happen with small hand guns and only in the North East. Example - Working the Docks in New York it was not uncommon to carry a heavier piece and a smaller piece in a pancake holster in your boot making it handy if you get knocked down from behind, etc... Now with a pair of leather or smooth cloth gloves it "can" be a problem in a haste. For the most part though it seems to be decorative and if not "hand cut" useless anyways in real wood as pressed expands and contracts loosing the rough tips on the diamond. I have also noticed it helps on a 12 GA pump shotgun for speed and pocketing it in your shoulder properly - again hunting and most likely using gloves. The fore grip area on the extra heavy caliber rifles also gives you much better control as the gun pushes you backwards in prone position.
I agree with you though 97 percent of the time it is not needed. Some of the recessed work is sure nice looking though and hand done can be real sharp. I used to do some as a hobby all by hand with those rather primitive hand tools, game over though my old hands not steady enough anymore  I really think it more then likely started when Business men and Women started carrying a long time ago - again wearing dress gloves.

Edit: Thinking more about it I remember my Mothers first handgun was a 22LR, Chrome, with Mother of Pearl grips! Just backing your thoughts on it!

One of the things I always forget is weather. I am just not used to hunting or shooting in the winter with snow and cold digits. Gloves would be a problem on smooth grips, and I can see where texture would be a boon.

If I must have texture I find this most pleasing. Nice fish scale grips on this Kimber Raptor. On my wish list as we speak.

I respect that piece for a few reasons. Very nice indeed. When I did Hand checkering(or carving in this one) it was always a challenge to evenly space 20 - 26 per inch hand carving into any piece, to actually do what he did there AND match it up to the engraving on the metal is an epic challenge. Again not needed but damn nice. Reminds me of a tall post bed with acorn tops solid Maple I was raised in at home, funny I can remember Vodka as Vodka as well :p
