Two years ago I bought several hinoki at a garden center end of year clearance. I took 7 of them and put them in this 20" round planter. One plant was pulled out by my squirrels and didn't survive. I have done nothing in these 2 years except water and weed enough to keep it going. I just built a monkey post today and set the pot on top of it. My plan is to track its progress here as I begin to train it.

Edit: turns out I didn’t try hard enough, and the answers to my questions are available on other posts across the forum. I guess I’ll leave this comment up since I am curious how this forest is coming along

Hi Penumbra, I have a couple questions for you…
Do you recall if you did any significant root work on these when potting them up? I can’t imagine any nursery Hinoki would have outstanding nebari from the get-go, so I’m wondering how much attention you gave to the roots. The reason I ask is because I’m staring at a dwarf Hinoki I’ve had for 3 years that is still very much in stage I development, but it’s been in a nursery pot and I’d like to give it more space to spread its roots laterally.
I recall there being long primary roots on the little guy, so I expect to have to cut a bunch of them down (this would happen over a few years) and I’m trying to get a sense of what to expect in its response to my overall effort to make the root system more compact.

I think I’ve seen others on the forum saying Hinoki does not take kindly to root work, but that was two summers ago and I haven’t been able to find any of those discussions. If you happen to know of anyone here who has some experience working on developing Hinoki material, could you point me in their direction? Thank you 🙂

How is this forest coming along, anyway? At this point it’s been 3 years since being potted — have you done any work on it lately?
