Just wanted to share this future broom style Mame I dug up recently. The land owner had burned off the area at some point, there were corpses of what were previously pretty awesome looking pines, I ended up collecting 6 young trees on the property.

opinions?

Nice twist down low in that little sapling. Good luck!

Here's one of the other small ones I collected.

You should put your location in your profile. It's hard to offer advice without knowing your climate.

My bad, thought I had already put it up...from Kentucky, Zone 6

Couldn't figure out how to add it to the profile, but I reckon the signature works

I’m glad you’re giving this species a shot. I’ve started to really like Virginia pines and collected last month. I need to post a photo.

I think your first one shows the most promise, as I can tell it’s already beginning to show signs of mature bark at the base. I don’t know what the nebari looks like but I’d make sure you have a plan for it to help determine your front.

So maybe dig a little to get a good view of where the roots flare out. Then, get rid of any of branches that come out in a whorl, leaving only 2 to choose from at each growth node. This would apply to all the trees you’ve posted here.
