When you plant 2-3 year old nursery stock in the ground to start putting on growth and thickening the trunk do you fertilize them like you do your bonsai in pots once they start showing signs of getting established? Or are their enough nutrients in the ground soil that it's not necessary?

Normally you will have enough nutrients in the soil, but it greatly depends on your type of soil. If you want maximal growth it is never bad to give some extra fertilization.

If you've got good, loamy soil, your trees will do well without help. Still, I always sprinkle a handful of 10-10-10 general landscape fert around the base of my in ground trees in spring and fall as it can't hurt but might help.
