Hello,

I need about 15 pots for new trees that I just bought (seedlings) and I was wondering if there would be any problems cutting up this clear plexi glass that I had laying around?

If the roots got big enough to hit the sides and got sunlight would it matter?

Thanks in advance

I don't know but always thought it would be cool to have some glass pots for developing trees so I could see the roots grow! Like an ant farm for my tree!

I've grown seedlings in clear plastic orchid pots for the very reson that Eric mentions. I've noticed a tendency for green stuff to grow on the inside of the clear surface. I guess it is algal - regardless, it doesn't seem to affect anything beyond reducing transparency of the pot wall.

I had my trees in jewel ham containers for a few years. I just switched to homemade baskets.CAM01186.jpg20150815_175740.jpg That was the same tree...
End of last year and middle of this one.
No energy wasted on Wrapping around the pot.
No big roots at all!
All feeders.

Anything that needs to dry out well will do better in clay or something breathable.

I can't say they are better or worse.
Obviously, baskets are no good for Root over rock starts.
But they are excellent for getting a rootball into a bonsai pot.

My only thing is the work you may have to do, when anything you can punch a hole in will work just as well.

Is the pot going to be sturdy enough to move?

By growing in this manner you are not promoting feeders roots to full potential. When growing in a mesh type container like a Rootmaker bag or colander your roots are doing what is called air pruning. When a root gets to the outside it hardens and stops forcing new roots to come out of the inside close to the trunk again.
I do agree that seeing roots grow is super fun!

For under 4in 1/4 should work.

If it is not UV protected you will Probly only get one year out of them.

They shatter easy after being exposed for a while.

I would throw a sock on mine to keep uv effects down, and hold em together.

Are you welding them? Bending? Duct tape?

I still think you can come up with a simpler solution, easier for you, and better for the trees.

That was an orange juice container.
This tree died BTW. Sphagnum over winter. I think I got a f'ed up batch of Sphagnum. Pesticides? Weed killers?
Fungus? Real hesitant now. Perlite it is!
