My podocarpus doesn’t have yet progression thread so opening one. Bought a while ago… repotted in conifer mix… watched, watered and fed well. Here is the purchase after reporting.
Many many flaws… major one being lack of nebari at the back even though front is really good looking… several scars, sparse pads and obviously branches done ‘Chinese’ style… way too long.

Grew strong… started to push new shots from everywhere. I could find very little information about podocarpus on-line but after consulting local Shanghainese gurus advise was to get the cut done during growing season here in China… mid-July possibly best time… so went this weekend and made some adjustments. Here is before I touched it…

And here is after cut… still not entirely happy with right hand side… want to make the main branch on the right much shorter but need to wait for some more growth there. I like the back branch sticking out to the right. Needs pads to get much fuller… hence the cut at this time of the year… they back bud very well but really slow growers. Than we take care of the apex… not yet leaning right way but that ok for now… critical thing is to let it grow through the rest of season and get a lot of growth.

comments more than welcome…

It's been 3 years since last update... tree still alive and actually doing really well. I've been consistently working to make it more compact. Main efforts were towards improving nebari on the back (front is quite good looking), healing wounds (some from the time that I bought it) and overall refinement of the branches. It's a conifer so obviously never going to show winter silhouette but gradual taper on the branches is adding a lot of visual appeal.
First photo is current front... this is what I was working towards... however if I rotate this few degrees clockwise there is another option though part of nebari goes away... instead there is a better look into interior of the tree with very interesting trunk movement (one small branch will need to get eliminated to enable even a better look inside). Will need to decide on it when repotting this tree in spring.
