Hey guys! I got this pomegranate last week at a show. I did nothing to it, except put a few guy wires to open it up and better shape it. It still in a horrible muck, and that is my first question: would it be too risky to bare root it now and put it in bonsai soil, without doing any root pruning? And that leads me to my second question: I am happy with its overall shape, but I would like to increase its ramification to fill up those empty spaces. How well do they back bud? Any advice into increasing the number of secondary branches?

Thank you!

Thank you, Judy. I am looking at the threads @bonhe 's has posted and his pomegranates are incredible!

I'd cut it back below the guy attachments.

Maybe off that left branch in favor of the curved bunch of three with less reverse taper.

It'll backbud.

Winter would be my woe.

Thanks Judy for lifting me up! ;-) I am so busy with other stuff lately, so if someone wants to find out something, please pm me. I will respond asap.

No, it's not. I could do a giant cutting at this time without a problem. But you need to know what you are doing! For bare root, it is ok to do that at this time, but it is much better if you want to wait until fall or in the end of winter (right before the new buds open up)

How well do they back bud?
They back bud very well.

Any advice into increasing the number of secondary branches?
One should:
1- feed the tree well
2- Depending on the area, one can prune the branches ≥ 1 . I have been using wiring, pulling and cutting and growing techniques together.
3- it loves full sun

Good luck.

Thank you, Bohne. I have been reading your pomegranate threads, and I was really hoping you would reply :P

ok, my pomegranate is not doing so good. It is not on bonsai soil, and although ir gets full sun and fertilizer, it seems to be dying. The leaves are getting yellow/red. It is too early for Fall here. Should I repot right now, with minimum root work? Thanks for your replies. @Bohne, if you read this, any advice is welcome!

Thanks

I am sorry for late response! I can not see the leaves up close so I will guess. It looks like the water got on the leaves at sunny time, so the leaves were burnt. The red leaves are also the sign of sunburn due to young leaves. Besides, it may be over the water. Pomegranate does not like wet feet! You may check the soil, if it is wet, don't water it. At this time, I would put it into the shady place so the tree can recover and remove the dead leaves. Hope it helps.
