Not happy enough with the PB as is.
I got some pics of how I cut em down.

Of course...there's times where that downward root growth is helpful, but when the time comes to get it in a proper pot, or in this case, just don't wanna sift so much soil, this can be helpful.......

Of Course I made sure the Zip ties are UV resistant.
Going on 2 years....the basket will crack first. Seems ok so far.

I've been lining em with screen too...to keep the #8822 in.

A little innovation could also fruit ya a 2fer.
Could pour a base for the top half like I did these..http://www.bonsainut.com/threads/those-pot-materials.18202/

And stiffen the bottom pieces top rim with something else, wire, duct tape?

I just bent up the side of one that actually been through 4 seasons, still very pliable...these baskets must be pretty decent....for $2.79.

I've thought about cutting them down, but I wasn't clever enough to to lower the top half of the basket down and zip tie it to make it sturdy. Smoke has posted pictures of tridents in cut down hydro baskets. Hope he doesn't mind me stealing a couple pictures.

Crazy....I Defoliated the top branches for the most part, to slow em down, and they got thicker than the bottom....more or less same sun.

Stars Wars voice -

Sorce,

try the air pot from Scotland.
Try the air pot.

Hmm can I send one to you as a gift?
Send pm with safe address for you, if you wish.

I am not sure how you will concrete the bottom.

Good Day

@Leo in N E Illinois I looked up oystra Virginia, and I'm near positive that's what this is.

Kinda deceiving because these new leaves I'm getting here look nothing like how they look in the ground.

But the pictures I found are dead ringers for the "established" leaves.

@sorce - I have some seedling Ostrya virginiana at home, I'll bring one by and we can compare. The flowers and seed are the one certain way to tell these species apart, but that takes a bigger & older plant. . Your's does look like mine, bark and leaves, so I think it is a good working guess at identity.

The way that leaf looks, kinda says it is a Oystra Virginia...

AkA an elm in a shitty tux.

It still wants to push buds all around that crease in the bend.

Is it "telling me" to chop it that low?

Or would you keep the curve?

Throw some chop marks on it?

I have a couple plans.

How do you know you married the right woman? When she's willing to take a pic of you in a pink thong for your internet friends...lol...unless @Smoke photoshopped it but the man doesn't strike me as the the kind to do anything "half assed"
That's no Photoshop job.
That's all Al.
