Hello all,

Just looking for some advice for future styling of my juniper. This was purchased from my local nursery in a one gallon container. All styling was completed this past spring when I removed dead and unwanted foliage. The left upright trunk was a one point lateral as this was meant to be a ground garden juniper. My thought now is to use this a sacrifice to thicken the main trunk. I have thought about air layering this trunk this upcoming spring. Any thoughts or suggestions?

FYI...This tree is currently outside for wintering and only brought in to take the pictures.

Thank you for any suggestions or potential changes, looking for some more ideas.

-Josh-

Hello and welcome JLBonsai. You are heading in the right direction with this tree. If it were mine, I would cut the end off the cascade. Next, I would remove that strange branch coming up from the soil. Then I would pull/wire the top down into that area.

Here is a virt of what I mean.

Cascade reduce by at least half the rest reduce to proportion.

Thank you very much for your insight, I like the ideas!! Wouldn't it be best to let this grow out some before doing any future cutting?

Thought I would post some images of the rear branch.....maybe I can air layer since I would lose it anyway.

I'd start to shape it now to bring your branching back to proportion with the trunk, as far as the back branch shorten and leave it for now.
