Its been a month since I started trying to grow bonsai again. I am thinking that I have been underwatering my Ivy. I have several Hedera Helix I am trying in several different growing mediums. Two have failed. I water using the toothpick method when the toothpick is pretty much dry.

1.Normal potting soil- Growing well
2.Half normal potting soil and half chicken grit- Growing well
3. 1 part fir bark, 1 part diatomite, 1 part chicken grit- failed. (I also have a willow leaf fig in this mix that has white roots showing when I dig down a little into the mix.)
4. 1 part lava rock, 1 part coconut husk- Failed. (The ficus I had in this also failed with dried out roots.)

When unpotted and the roots examined on the failed ones they looked dried out and stringy.
Are they underwatered when they look like that? Does Ivy need more organic material in the soil?

I wont stop till I get this right!
